Eddie Mabo was born in 1937 on Murray Island in the Torres Straight. Mabo was a spokesperson for railway workers and the union and opening the first 'Aboriginal only' school in Townsville. He attended a Lands Rights Conference where he shared his experience on his understanding on Torres Straight Islander land ownership.
After 5 months of Eddie's death, the High Court has recognised the Meriam people as having a native title and in which they were entitled to occupy the Mer Islands.
