Prior the 1967 referendum, it was very difficult to obtain equal rights for the Indigenous people. The only way for this to happen is if the Commonwealth took responsibility for Aboriginal affairs. This became the focus of the national campaign for the the activists.
Methods Used
- Petition Campaigns - over 100 000 signatures in 94 petitions were gathered
- Freedom Rides - places where protesters were given the chance to protest for change in the local and national level
- Media Campaign - the media has used the newspaper, radio and television to promote the Freedom Rights
- Legal Campaigns Over Land Rights - campaigns that the High Court challenged by Paul Coe in 1979 and the Mabo Judgement in 1991
